Dr David Stevens: * serves on the Executive Directory of the Christian Medical and Dental Society, U.S.A. * is a popular columnist and U.S.A. Talk Show guest * previously worked in Sudan, Somalia and Kenya
Dr. David Stevens serves as Executive Director of the Christian Medical & Dental Society, a movement of Christian doctors that seeks to change the heart of healthcare. Founded in 1931, CMDS: * promotes positions and addresses policies on health care issues; * conducts overseas and domestic mission projects; * coordinates a network of Christian doctors for fellowship and professional growth; * sponsors student ministries in medical and dental schools; * distributes educational and inspirational resources; * holds marriage and family conferences; * provides Third World missionary doctors with continuing education resources; * and conducts academic exchange programs overseas. At CMDS, Dr Stevens has helped develop an evangelism training program that teaches thousands of doctors and others how to share their faith in a healthcare setting. He has also helped launch a nationwide network of community-based ministries that provide on-site discipleship, fellowship and outreach opportunities for local doctors and medical and dental students. As a leading spokesman for Christian doctors in America, Dr Stevens has conducted hundreds of television, radio and print media interviews, and has appeared on national outlets such as USA Today, National Public Radio, Focus on the Family, Prime Time America, the NBC Today Show, and many others. CMDS members hear him as the host of the popular Christian Doctor's Digest audio magazine, which has featured national leaders such as Dr James Dobson and Dr C. Everett Koop. Dr Stevens writes a regular health column for the New Man Promise Keeper's magazine and writes for and serves on the editorial board of Christian Single magazine. He is currently authoring a book. Prior to his service with CMDS, Dr Stevens served as Director of World Medical Mission. Serving with World Medical Mission in Somalia, Dr Stevens led an emergency medical mission that treated 45,000 suffering Somalis. In the Sudan, medical teams under his leadership treated over 25,000 villagers to stop the spread of an epidemic. Dr Stevens has seen firsthand how meeting the physical needs of patients provides opportunities to meet their spiritual needs - by introducing them to God's love through a relationship with Jesus Christ. From 1985 to 1991, Dr Stevens served as executive officer and medical superintendent of Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya - one of the outstanding mission hospitals in the Third World. At Tenwek, he directed a $4 million development plan, secured the installation of an $850,000 hydroelectric plant, oversaw the start of a nursing school and doubled the size of the hospital. The community health care program he designed at Tenwek is currently reaching over 200,000 Kenyans and serves as an example of what Third World medical outreach can accomplish. Dr Stevens's experiences provide rich illustrations for inspirational and educational presentations at seminars, conferences, and churches. His topics include missions and evangelism, spiritual commitment and growth, bioethics, and other medically and spiritually related subjects. Dr Stevens holds degrees from Asbury College and the University of Louisville School of Medicine and is board certified in family practice. He has regularly taught at the Christian Medical & Dental Society educational seminars for missionary physicians and dentists in Kenya, Malaysia, and other forums. Dr Stevens and his wife, Jody, have a son, Jason, and two daughters, Jessica and Stacy. |
