Sunday 27 January 2002 - `Lord save me'

(Summary of sermon by Rev Michael Ngubane)

Matt 14: 22 - 32

This incident took place after the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand. With some reluctance the disciples got into the boat to cross over, at Jesus' command. It was late, they were tired and there was a storm brewing. Jesus went alone to pray. If He, the Son of God, had the need to pray how much more so we human beings? Jesus received power through prayer, and this is displayed in our text where He took command over the storm. We need prayer and fellowship with God to see us through the storm.

Jesus wants to dispel doubt and reveal who He is. When Peter saw that it was the Lord approaching on the water, even though some thought it was a ghost, he asked the Lord to command him to come. The others were so fixated on the storm that they could no longer recognise Jesus Himself. Mary Magdalene at the grave, and the 2 disciples on the road to Emmaus, were so filled with grief that they couldn't see Jesus at first.

We can be so distracted by the storms of life and seeming insurmountable problems that we don't see the Lord. But when Peter trusted in the Lord he could do the impossible and even the threatening water carried him. But, when he was almost there he looked away from the Lord to the waves and the impossibilities around him. It was almost fatal.

Are your eyes fixed on Jesus? If doubt has crept into your life you need to look to the Lord for restoration.

When Peter saw his own sinking situation and the uselessness of his own efforts he didn't keep quiet about it - he shouted to the Lord "save me."

Perhaps you're on a downhill slide and you keep quiet about your predicament, even though Jesus is close by to save and rescue you.

Are you living in doubt about Him and Christianity? These are signs that you must wake up and call upon Him.

Jesus immediately responded to Peter's cry, as He will also stretch out His hand and save us when we call upon Him.

He then rebuked them for doubting.

Wouldn't you like to receive His inner peace instead of the turmoil which rages within you? Here is Jesus and you can come to Him. He wants to save and restore you. Instead of the fear which paralyses you you may come to Him to remove this fear. Then you can get to trust Him in all situations.
