Sunday 17 March 2002 - `Abhor evil' - Funeral of A.V. Zikhali
(Summary of sermon by Rev Erlo Stegen)
Rom 12:9
9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor
that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
These words are short, but contains huge amount of teaching.
Firstly, abhor what is evil and secondly, cling to what is good.
This word, abhor, is an extreme word to show complete separation, and loathing, of evil.
Many Christians fall short in their Christian life, because of this point. These
Christians have not abhorred, loathed and hated evil. Do you know that abhorrence in you,
or are you going along with the stream. Do not stay close to evil and hang around evil,
else you will give in to evil, sooner or later. Understand and know that you must have
this abhorrence for evil in you, else the devil will get you.
There was a radio station, whose tower was struck by lightning and
fried all the wires. On inspection, they found that the tower was not serviced in due
time, and that was the cause of the lightning striking and frying the tower. And so that
station was off the air and they had to brake down the whole tower, because of negligence.
The Christians in this world should have a clear message to the whole world, but many are
negligent in their Christian life. And they are no longer spiritually alive. They are off
the air. You must be spiritually alive and healthy day by day, loathing evil. You can live
in the world, but never let the world find an entrance into your life. The Corinthian
church was attacked by the devil from all sides and infiltrated with evil, although they
knew all about the gifts of the Spirit. And so God commanded them in 2 Corinthians 6:17 to
be separate from the world and not to even touch the unclean things. This should be our
life too.
We should cling to what is good and utterly separate from, and
abhor evil. |
