Sunday 9 February 2003 - ""Have
you seen God's holiness?""
(Summary of sermon by Erlo Stegen)
Isa 6:1-4¶ "In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting
upon a throne,
high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each
one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and
with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD
of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. And the posts of the door moved at the
voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke."
In the year that King Uzziah died (of leprosy) Isaiah saw the King of Kings. The Lord was
still sitting upon His throne, high and lifted up. If your trust is in man your
foundations will be shaken but if your trust is in God you will stand firm.
Isaiah saw the King in His temple. Today, that temple is you, the believers, the
church. If Isaiah were to see you, the church, what would he record?
Until this moment the prophet Isaiah did not know of anything wrong in his life. When
he was exposed to God's holiness Isaiah saw his own sinfulness.
The seraphim were creatures burning for God. They called out "holy, holy,
holy" is the Lord of Hosts, in unison, no noise or chaos - in one voice they cried.
We need to burn for God like the seraphim who focused on the Lord alone. If you burn for
Him "no flies will sit on a red hot iron."
In Psalm 104:4, "Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming
fire"
One minister, lecturing his students, relates how he asked them to write down the
attributes of God. Most started with the love of God and only ended with the attribute of
His holiness. The minister explained that nowhere to the seraphim proclaim "love,
love, love" or "wisdom, wisdom, wisdom" but they did thrice proclaim His
holiness.
Are we that holy temple? Does the world shake because of His holiness seen in us. |
