Easter Weekend, 2 - 4 April 2010

Sun, 4 Apr 2010 - Rev Erlo Stegen took the final service of the weekend and preached from John 19:30 and Matt 26:29, "But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom." (read the full summary here)

Sat, 3 Apr 2010, 15.00 - Rev Erlo Stegen once again preached from John 19:30 on the theme "The crowning of Jesus as King is complete".

Jesus was born as King, lived as King and died as King. Pilate wrote "Jesus King of the Jews" in three languages. When the chief priests protested he said "what I have written I have written". It was the Roman tradition to post a person's crimes on the cross he was crucified on. So this was the crime of Jesus that "He was the King of the Jews".

(The soldiers made a crown of thorns to mock Him. Everytime you sin you are mocking Him with that crown of thorns. But today we look at His heavenly crown, His being King.)

The Jews rejected Him as King. They did not want to acknowledge His authority over them. Till today they reject Him.

We see right through the Old Testament that the Messiah will suffer and die for His people. We read it in the Messianic Psalms like Ps 22. Abraham's offering of his son is a symbol of God Who offered His Son to die for us. The only difference is that God went all the way with His only begotten Son and gave Him for our sins.

Although the Jews still reject Him as King over them they will one day acknowledge Him as their King Whom they pierced.
"And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn." (Zechariah 12:10).

The Bible is clear about the confession of sin. If you had sinned in the old testament you would bring a sacrifice and everyone would know you bring it for the sin. So too you cannot just confess your sin in your bedroom. We read in John that people hate the light because their works are evil. The one who hides his sin hates the light. But the one who loves the light also bring his works to the light. David found no rest from his sin and his "bones dried up" until he brought it to the light and acknowledged it, before Nathan.

Choose to crown Him as King over your life today before it is too late and you are forced to bow, for "every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord".

Sat, 3 Apr 2010, 10.00 - Rev Erlo Stegen took the morning service and preached from the theme verse, John 19:19, 30 and from, Gen 3:15, "And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel".

This is the crux of the matter. It is astonishing words. It is the first pronouncement of the Gospel. Never was a sermon preached like this. God preached this sermon to all of mankind and also to diabolus, the prince of darkness and his hosts.

Satan thought he got back at God by causing Adam and Eve to fall, but in the midst of this misery God pronounced this judgement upon satan, his head will be bruised; in Hebrew it has the meaning that it is totally crushed.

On Calvary Jesus gave the final death-blow to the devil - there He crushed his head. We have all sinned and are under a curse. Even the earth is under a curse because of us. But the Lord Jesus came and overcame the devil.

"And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it." (Colossians 2:15).

Satan has no rights over you except what you give him over you by hiding your sins.

So when Jesus said it is finished, it was the final victory over the devil exactly as foretold.

Fri, 2 Apr 2010, 19.00 - Rev Erlo Stegen preached from John 19:30, "So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit."

The word which Jesus cried "it is finished", in the Greek signifies "complete, execute, conclude, discharge (a debt)".

On the Cross we see the greatest love of God.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16).

This love can be compared with nothing else. It reminds us of what Jesus said, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." (John 15:13).

He gave His only Son for us. How then will He withhold any good things from us?

During the time of the slave trade there was an evil man who wanted to buy a certain young girl. She was terrified when she saw his interest in her. But there was also a good man at the auction and he had pity on the girl. When the bidding on her began the evil man immediately put down a very high bid on her, but the good man simply outbid him. This carried on for a while until the evil man got mad with anger and made a very high offer. Once again the good man made a higher offer, until the evil man could no longer afford it. He stormed off cursing and swearing. As they handed the key to the chains which bound the girl to the good man, he unlocked her and told her that she was free to go where she please. She fell on her face at his feet and said that she would only want to serve him freely for the rest of her life for what he had done for her, saving her from that evil man.

So the devil came with sin and enslaved you but the Lord Jesus paid His very life to set you free. Will you serve Him freely?

Fri, 2 Apr 2010, 15.00 - Rev Joe Newlands took the afternoon session from 1Cor 3:10, 11, "According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ."

There is only this one solid foundation on which we can build. There are many who try to lay other foundations like secular humanism and evolution, but they are all foundations built on sand which will be destroyed. Those who build on evolution try to prove that we descended from the apes. They may believe that they descended from the apes if they insist but we were created by God.

If you build on this solid foundation, Jesus Christ, you will not be moved.
We can look at examples right through the Bible of people who built on this solid foundation and were not moved. We think of Moses, Daniel and his friends, Stephen, Paul, Peter and the apostles etc. They all built on this one true foundation and stood under all circumstances.

Fri, 2 Aprl 2010, 10.00 - Rev Alpheus Mdlalose preached from 1Pet 1:18-19, "knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot."

Some might excuse their sins as family weeknesses, like a drunkard or a man given to anger. Whatever the empty ways of superstition which were handed down to you by your forefathers, you need to be saved from that. We ought not to do the things of the people of this world. Let them live as they want to live but we have been redeemed by the Blood of the Lamb.

Even if you're in church, carry a Bible, sing in the choir, if your sin haven't been washed by the Blood of the Lamb, all of your Christianity will mean nothing.

There are Christians who were on fire for God when they got converted but with the passing of time they've become lukewarm and are easy prey for the devil.
