Christmas-concert in GOUDA (Holland)
The Eurochor gave their first Christmas-concert in Holland on Saturday
evening, 8 December 2001 (in the St. Johns Cathedral in Gouda). This Cathedral has
world-famous
glasses and is the longest Church of Holland (123 meters).
About 500 people visited the concert. The reactions after the concert were
overwhelming! The different spheres the choir presented touched people.
Christmas-songs in German, French, Dutch and Russian gave an atmosphere
accordingly.
The verger of the church was very impressed. He said that he heard many
choirs, but this was unique! It isn't usual in Holland to applaud during a
concert. We, as sober Dutchmen, say: you must give God the glory and not the
choir... But after two songs the people started to applaud heartily! The
verger called the applause 'a historical event in this church'! He said that
the choir must come back, because he will tell everybody about this concert,
how special it was. Next time more people will come, he predicted. The CD of
the choir will be heard in the church during the coming weeks. Tourists will
visit the Cathedral, while the Eurochor is singing on the background.
This concert was really an international happening! And customs are
different. When something is very special, people in Holland will stand up
and give an ovation. After the last song the whole congregation stood up and
applauded. But the choirmaster thought that the people stood up to go home,
so the choir gave no extra song...
Afterwards several singers asked why the people stood up, and we could tell
them: it is the highest honour they can give you after a concert!
It was a special blessing to have the choir in Holland. And our prayer is
that the message that they proclaimed will touch the hearts of the
listeners!
We thank the choir, musicians and choirmaster for all they offered to come
to Holland. May the Lord bless them richly and continue to use them in His
service!
