Reformation Day, 31 October 2004
On 31 October 1517 Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the
church door of the Wittenberg cathedral. By God's grace, Luther's courageous act of
challenging the corruption and unBiblical practices of the Medieval Catholic hierarchy
launched the Great Reformation.
"Unless I am convinced by Scripture or clear reasoning that I am in error - for popes
and councils have often erred and contradicted themselves - I cannot recant, for I am
subject to the Scriptures I have quoted; my conscience is captive to the Word of God. It
is unsafe and dangerous to do anything against one's conscience. Here I stand. I cannot do
otherwise. So help me God. Amen."- Martin Luther
A special commemoration evening service
on the Reformation was held at Kwasizabantu on 31 October. A slide presentation of the
Reformation was given and the audience sang the famous hymn "A Mighty Fortress is our
God".
Reformation Principles
Some of the great blessings which we benefit from, as a result of
the
Reformation, include:
- The Bible available in our own language.
- Scripture alone is our final authority.
- Justification is received by Faith alone.
- Christ alone is the head of the Church.
- Religious freedom.
- Liberty of conscience.
- Free enterprise.
- Lex Rex (the rule of law).
- Separation of powers.
- Constitutionally limited republics.
- The Lordship of Christ in all areas of life

every portion of the truth of God except precisely that point which the world and the
devil are at that moment attacking, then I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may
be professing Him. Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is proved; and
to be steady on all the battlefront besides is merely flight and disgrace if he flinches
at that point." - Martin Luther
