"Ransomed and redeemed" - Rev Erlo Stegen
Hos 13:14
or

Luther translated the first part of this verse as "I will redeem them out of the
hand of hell." It implies that they are already in hell. Those without Jesus Christ,
live a hellish life, although they don't realise it. Once you've experienced the
redemption of God, you will know its bliss and how wonderful it is to be redeemed.
The word ransom can have two meanings:
- to winnow
- to bail out (e.g form jail)
In Hebrew, ransom is hdp (padah),
meaning redemption by paying a price.
The Hebrew for redeem is lag
(gaĈal), with the idea of buying back something
that belonged to you. All of us are created by God. We are His property, but Satan came
and stole us from Him. Jesus came to buy us back to Himself.
This is something marvelous! We were on our way to hell,
but God sent Jesus to redeem and ransom us!
The following stories illustrate how Jesus redeems
people.
- Jacob Khosi grew up in Singapore. His single aim in life
was to make money and show off his riches. He became a drug-dealer. His business prospered
immensely and people from all over the world came to him to buy heroin and other drugs. He
was delighted. However in 1980 the police caught him, and put him in jail in solitary
confinement. All his desires and dreams were shattered. He became depressed and felt sorry
for himself. He was also a slave of tobacco, and he could find none in jail. His cravings
made him mad and he begged from the officer in charge of him for some tobacco. One day the
officer got him some. He had nothing else with him in the cell, except a Gideon's Bible.
He tore the pages from the Bible, rolled cigars therewith and started to smoke one after
the other. Later on he got tired and fell asleep with a half-smoked cigar. When he woke
up, the cigar had gone out, so he opened it and read the following words from the part of
the page that was still left, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" He wanted
to know more about this story, so he requested a complete Bible and read the whole story
about Saul. As he read the story, God spoke to him and he broke down and cried, "Oh,
God, if you could save a man like Saul, save me too." He confessed his sins and
received mercy and was redeemed by Jesus Christ. His whole life changed in prison and he
started to testify to his inmates. Shortly afterwards he was miraculously released and he
became a preacher, telling others of what God had done for him.
- A certain girl, Dot, grew up, got married and then got
the shock of her life. Her husband did not treat her as her father treated her. So she
divorced him. Shortly afterwards a charming young man came by with his flashy car, to show
off to the girls. She got interested in him. He too had divorced his wife, and flirted
with other girls. He owned a big hotel and ship. He took her out on cruising trips and to
different hotels. It was like heaven to her and she was so glad she divorced her first
husband. He told her about his first unhappy marriage too and so they told each other how
happy they were with their new lot. Shortly afterwards she fell pregnant, and then the
reality of all the baby-sitting tasks hit them. He suggested an abortion, and so did her
friends. She was persuaded and off she went to have one. It was not at all what she
expected. She was conscious throughout the whole procedure and saw and felt everything
that was done. She felt how they crushed her baby and then she saw how they pulled out
pieces of human remains - arms, legs, etc. She left there knowing that she murdered her
own baby. She became depressed and no comfort from her boy-friend or anyone else helped.
She began to resent her boy-friend and the others who suggested the abortion, and she
parted from her boy-friend, bitter. She remembered her parents at last and went home. She
had a twin sister at home that had had two abortions already, but had come to Jesus Christ
for forgiveness and found rest for her soul. Dot saw her sister reading her Bible and she
decided that she will try to find comfort in the same way. She got her grandmother's
Bible, started to read from the beginning and the words from Gen 9:6 spoke to her,
"Whosoever shed man's blood, by man must his blood be shed, for in the image of God
had He made man." (Here we see clearly how our government is against the Word of God,
having abandoned capital punishment). She realised that she had shed the blood of her
child and that she had to die. For the first time did the reality of Jesus' death on the
cross become clear to her. Jesus died in her stead, that she did not have to die, if only
she would accept His offering. She did indeed accept His offering, confessed and forsook
her sins, and turned to Him with all her heart. She went to her parents and sister and
gave them her testimony. God saved her and today she goes around, witnessing of what
God had done for her.
Let us remember these two, Jacob and Dot, and follow in
their footsteps.
