"The four marks of a hypocrite"

Rev John Powys preached from Ezek 33:30-32:

30 "As for you, son of man, the children of your people are talking about you beside the walls and in the doors of the houses; and they speak to one another, everyone saying to his brother, "Please come and hear what the word is that comes from the LORD.' 31So they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain. 32Indeed you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they do not do them.

Today we will look at the 4 marks of a hypocrite.

  1. God says to Ezekiel, his people talk about the idea of going to hear God's Word at the mouth of His servant, Ezekiel. They talk about going to church. It sounds so good, and only if we had more people like this; but still it could be the talk of a hypocrite.
  2. They go to hear God's Word. They do not only talk about it. Still in coming, you could come to hear God's Word as a hypocrite.
  3. They sit under God's Word as preached by His servant, like Mary who sat at Jesus' feet and listened to His words. They are not like Martha, cumbered and concerned about many other things, but actually go and listen to God's Word; but it could still be hypocritical.
  4. We've seen the walk, talk and sit of a hypocrite. Now we read at the end of verse 31, they even talk of God's Word they've heard. They speak about love, as people talk and sing in church. With their mouths they love much - praise and worship.

However, all of the above is only hypocritical, because they do not do what God says through His servant. Jesus loved sinners, and never had arguments with them, but had arguments with the church-goers who did not do what God commanded. Jesus said, "If you love Me keep My commandments". That is the proof of you love to Him, not how much you proclaim it with your mouth.

This is a matter of life and death, and of heaven and hell. All of us must die one day and then we will be judged to go to one or the other - heaven or hell. Make sure that you do what you hear God speak through His servant, otherwise all your church-going will only add to your condemnation one day and will make your hell hotter.
