"Escape for your life" Gen 19:17
Text summary of sermon by Rev Erlo Stegen, 4 July 2006, 15:00
Genesis 19:17
God sent some of His servants to Lot and said that he should flee
or escape for his life. If you tarry, you lose your life. At times, there is no time to
spare, you need to flee immediately for your life. They left everything.
Lot didn't have time to organise things. When he was slow the
servants of the Lord pulled him, his wife and daughters and they fled. His wife, however,
looked back and she turned into a pillar of salt. Remember Lot's wife. Josephus wrote
about many things not found in the Bible and he testified that he and many others saw the
salt pillar of Lot's wife.
The Hebrew word means to be as slippery as an eel or as soap.
Joseph escaped from Potiphar's wife in this way and left his jacket in her hands in his
effort to get away. In the same way David escaped from Saul. When David killed Goliath,
the people sang his praises and Saul was very jealous and planned to kill David. When the
soldiers looked for David at his house, Milka pulled a ruse on Saul's soldiers and David
could escape. On 8 October 1871, Moody preached a sermon to thousands of people in Chicago
on Matthew 27 v 22 and asked the people what they were going to do with the Lord Jesus. He
told them he would ask them for their answer the follow evening. That night, Chicago was
razed to the ground by a fire. Moody regretted waiting for a decision. From that time
onwards he resolved to tell the people to make a decision now.
You cannot escape from God. Ahab was killed in battle by a random
arrow. Escape to God and let Him fight for you. God can fight for His people. Part from
sin and the devil.
