Report from Mozambique Trip 9 - 17 November 2003
A team of four co-workers including Frans Huber,
Thomas Maphanga, John Powys and Jonson Ngatsane left for Gaza Province in Mocambique on
9th November. We met Pastor Daniel Hlongwane from the Dorothea Mission in Chokwe, he
accompanied us on the trip as he was the organiser of this outreach. We arrived in Mapai
on Monday and set up camp in the village. Mapai is a very poor village with a high AIDS
rate. During the day we had meetings with ministers and leaders as well as their wives. We
shared with them Pauls instruction to Titus, to teach sound doctrine. The sound doctrine
being to teach the old men, old women, young men, young women and servants how to live
upright and godly in this present age. Bibles that were donated by someone were also
distributed to those who didn't have. In the evenings we showed films, about 2000 people
attended the film services.
On our way to Massangena from Mapai we stopped
over at Maxailla where Pastor Daniels home is. We were overwhelmed by the hospitality and
generosity of the Shangaan people. We experienced something of the old Biblical stories
where something was first slaughtered and eaten before we could proceed on our way. These
people are very poor but will not let you go without having given you something
substantial to eat.
In Massangena we were housed in the
Administrators old house which was very comfortable. We also had meetings for ministers
etc in the day and film services in evenings. Jonson taught the people in Mapai and
Massangena how to plant vegetables in a bag with very effective drip irrigation in drought
situations, this was very profitable and was gratefully received. We walked through the
village giving Gospel tracts to people and also had the opportunity to preach the Gospel
to a witchdoctor in his hut.
God kept us and we returned home safely on 17th
November. We trust the Lord will give the increase on the sowing and watering that we
could do.
