Brief Report on Trip by John Powys

We departed from KSB at 04h00 on the 13th and arrived 21,5 hrs later at Carlos' place (see map on main page) at 01h30 on the 14th.

We had a few meetings during the 3 days and showed a film every night, this is a completely new endeavour right in the bush away from all civilisation. Many people came especially at night to see the films. Sometimes people would just walk past, sit down and wait for a service. We parted from there after the Sunday morning service taken by Michael Ngubane.

We overnighted in Gondola and continued to the Zambesi River where we crossed by ferry and looked for place to camp in the bush, we were not successful as the bush was too thick and the danger of landmines did not permit us to venture too deep.( Afterwards we learned that 4 man eating lions are killing people in that area) We finally camped outside an old Catholic church in Namacurra.

In the city of Nampula we had only one days seminar with pastors and members of various churches, in the evening we showed the film ' Izono zakho sizokufumana' to a large group of people, we heard since our return that many people were touched.

On the 21st we left for Mocimboa da Praia in Cabo del Gado, right in the north of Mozambique. We were welcomed at the entrance of the village by singing believers from the local church. The people there are mostly from the Makonde tribe and are still an unreached people group. We spent two full days there with services from eight in the morning till late, the people are so hungry they are prepared to sit all day and listen to the gospel. Those who came from far would just sleep on the ground in a row, open air. On the last evening they put on a play for us to show what the Gospel does for people, it was really touching, we were then presented with various gifts to thank us for coming. They asked us to make it an annual visit.

On the way from Nampula to Cabo del Gado, Karel hit a very bad pothole on a poor tar road, he did not notice any damage or irregularity on the Ford 4x4. It went well all the way ( about 650 kms) to Cabo del Gado. When we left Mocimboa da Praia early morning on the 24th we were travelling north to Tanzania, about 5 km before a small village called Palma there was a sharp 90 deg bend to the right on a dirt road. As Karel went into the bend he seemed to lose control of the vehicle and left the road and the vehicle rolled. Being heavy laden the vehicle was badly damaged, but by God's grace nobody was seriously injured. Pastor Cassamo who was in the vehicle broke a bone in his neck ( we only learned this later when he went for an x-ray) Please pray for him.

We then turned the vehicle back on to its wheels and after discovering that the engine had been damaged we towed it to Palma to report the accident to the Police.

Then we had trouble, Mozambique has been a communist country and the police can be very difficult if they want to, and they normally want to.

However we were finally allowed to proceed and returned to Nampula after which we started the journey to Malawi, at times we averaged around 20 km per hour, at other times max 60 kph.

We spent 3 days in the Mangochi area among the Yao people who are 90% muslim. Pieter Loots is a missionary amongst these people and we had very blessed services with some of his groups. One group consists of only 4 Christians, but because the services are held under a tree many muslims came and listened to the message. We also showed the film which attracted hundreds of people.

We arrived back in South Africa on the 3rd and back at KSB on the 4th after a 9000km journey, we can only thank God for His travelling mercies and for all the wonderful opportunities to preach to Gospel to the poor and needy in Africa.
