5. July, Thursday - Morning Service

John Lilford-Powys

Scripture: John 3:14

As Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, don't you want to lift up the Son of man in your life. If you come to Jesus today you can be saved. When the people in the desert looked at the snake, they were saved, but those who did not look up at it, died. You who are not a believer, are dead spiritually. Don't you want to be saved today?

5. July, Thursday - Afternoon Service

Bruno Hlongwane

Scripture: Luke 19:1-10

Zacheus heard about Jesus and longed to see him. There where some obstacles he had to overcome There was a great crowd and he, being short in stature, couldn't see Jesus.
Maybe you came here with a need. But there will be things that will try to distract your attention, but don't allow it. Maybe your friends, the opposite sex, the different fashions and hairstyles - all these things could hinder you from seeing Jesus and you don't even notice that He is passing you by. Zacheus even acted contrary to the culture and ran ahead and climbed a tree to see Jesus. And Jesus called him and his life was changed. If you sincerely seek Jesus with all your heart, you will find Him and he will change your life.

6. July, Friday - Morning service

Dr. Albu van Eeden

Scripture: Prov. 4: 14-21

Title of  the message: God’s way and the devil’s way.
God warns us not to enter the path of wickedness. He doesn’t speak about what you are doing, but about the way you walk upon. You might walk way of evil and do good and walk on way of God and do evil things. Don’t try to serve God while walking wicked ways. You’ll try and try and not succeed.
First step to leave way of wickedness: Confess your sins, by name and not nice names. Second step: Go and make restitution where you’ve done wrong.

What is person like who walks on evil ways?
-           Must do evil before going to sleep, defile themselves, dream evil dreams.
-           Their sleep is taken away unless they make someone else fall.
-           Their way is like darkness, and they don’t know what causes them to stumble. Maybe you’re depressed, unhappy and even considering suicide, because you don’t know what is wrong.

What is God’s way like?
-           Like the shining sun, shining ever brighter until the perfect day. We know sun goes down before day ends, but God says if we walk in His way, sun will shine brighter. When we die, our day will end in light, like bright sun at noon.

It’s your opportunity to leave way of darkness and turn to God’s way.

6. July, Friday - Evening service

Erlo Stegen

Scripture: John 5:1

There were three important feasts of the Jews:
1. The Passover, commemorating their deliverance out of Egypt, the house of bondage.
2. Pentecost (50 days after passover)
3. The feast of tabernacles or tents, commemorating their dwelling and travelling in tents for forty years in the wilderness

Now, it is generally agreed amongst scholars of the Bible that this feast was the Passover feast, although the Bible does not say which feast it was. This is also the most important feast of the Jews. Now, this feast of the Passover starts on the 14th of April. God said to Moses that this month of April will be their first month of the year. The Jews call it the month Nisan.

And so we find some Christians even counting their years from their second birth. A 50-year old man said he was seven years old, when asked for his age, because he had been saved for seven years. Another man said he was two years old, being saved out of Egypt for two years. How long ago have you been saved out of Egypt and from the works of Egypt?

Israel had to slaughter the Passover lamb and strike of the blood on their doorposts so that the angel of death would 'pass over'. In the same way, we take the blood of Jesus and put it on our hearts. And how do we do it? By coming to Jesus, confessing and forsaking our sins. And Israel had to eat the meat that was roasted over the fire. So we need to eat God's Word. And as Israel ate the unleavened bread on the 15th, so, after you have been cleansed from your sins, you need to live a life free from sin.

7. July, Saturday - Morning Service

F. H. Stegen

Scripture: John 5:2

You need to answer the Lord's question: Would you like to be made whole? He is waiting for your reply. His blood can cleanse you from every sickness and sin.
Remember to read God's Word; it will give you all that you need through the day. This is how you will receive new strength.

To get to the pool, they had to pass through five porches. Now we know that the number five stands for the grace of God. Without the Grace of God we cannot attain anything. Each and everyone who wants to be healed must let the Grace of God deal with them.
The man we read about had been cripple for 38 years - most of which he had probably spent at the side of the pool. His perseverence is amazing. After many years of trying to be healed and failing, he did not give up, but still persisted.
Have you given up because you have not reached the water?
Remember Jacob, who sent all over the stream, willing to be alone with God.

God wants you to be healed and to receive help, so that you in turn can help others to get into the water. Are you accepting His help that He offers?

Even if you see others getting help and you not, never get tired of crying to God for help. The cripple saw many others receiving help, while he did not receive help, but still he persisted. And Jesus saw his heart, and finally helped him. In the same way God sees your heart and will help you if you call on him with all your heart.

Finally, you must remember that when God helps you, you in turn must help others to get into the water.

7. July, Saturday - Afternoon Service

Michael Müller

Scripture: Ecclesiastes 12:1

"Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them"

The youth is very important. The most important decisions of our life is made in our youth. For that God has given us His Word to make those decisions. We cannot choose the time of our Salvation. There is a time when Jesus is passing by our lives and that is the time to respond. The paralyzed man of John 5 might have had only those few moments when Jesus was close and offered help. If he did not respond then, it might have been too late for ever.

The rest of the afternoon service was a time for testimony of what God has done.

7. July, Saturday - Evening Service

Erlo Stegen

Scripture: John 5:2-4

Jerusalem had many gates, but the Sheep gate was the most important of them all. It was the gate on the North side of Jerusalem, which led to the Temple. In the days of Nehemiah it was the first gate they built into the wall of Jerusalem. This gate was sanctified by God's Word and prayer. In the same way God's place and house has been sanctified by His Word and prayer. And those that come into His house and presence without Godly reverence and fear, come under His judgement and do not receive help. He sees those who come into His house with their sins and do not part with it.

The pool of Bethesda (meaning 'house of mercy' in Hebrew) was conveniently situated close to the Temple so that all those who brought their sheep to be sacrificed could wash them in the pool first. They knew that they could not offer God a dirty animal. Now, Jesus Christ is that pool today where we must dip ourselves and be washed and cleansed from our sins, before we come into God's presence and offer ourselves to Him.

An altar call was made and about a thousand came forward to give their lives to God. We thank and praise Him for His grace and mercy still today!

8. July Sunday - Morning Service

Erlo Stegen

Scripture: John 5:6-9, 12-13

(about 8 000 in auditorium)

* He didn't go to grand places, but to places of need. He went straight to the worst case. Jesus had come to earth not for the healthy but the sick, not the righteous but the sinners. Do you have the same mind and spirit of Jesus, having compassion for those in need?
* Jesus asked him: Do you want to be made whole? The man answered these with condemning words: "I have no man to help me." Many die daily in South Africa in darkness, crying, I have no man to help me. If another person falls into sin do you condemn and gossip about him or do you try and help to bring him back to health. Pray & ask God to open your eyes to see what He sees.
Also, some people don't want to be made whole. They find their illness, or sin, convenient and prefer not to be healed.
* Jesus told him to rise, take up his bed and go. He obeyed without doubting and arguing. He didn't even know the Man who healed him. God has done much for you without you knowing it. Will you not come today and be healed of your sin, accepting Jesus?

9. July, Monday - Morning Service

Erlo Stegen

Scripture: John 5:14

There were three points:
1. Jesus found him in the temple
2. "You are made whole, sin no more"
3. God is not to be mocked by continued sin, but to be feared, for He knows the future.

Firstly then, Jesus found him in the temple. Although he did not know that it was Jesus who made him whole, he instinctively knew that he has to give God the honour and glory. Where are you found? Are you found in the temple, in God's house and presence, serving, honouring and praising Him for what He has done for you - even the things you don't know about? Or are you found in the pubs and discos?

Secondly, when God has made you whole, stop sinning and pay your vows you have made to God. So many people, when they are in trouble, promise God many things, but afterwards forget all they had promised. You remember how you promised God your whole life to serve Him alone? What has happened to that promise. Have you kept it? The story was related of the man who said he wanted to preach the Gospel when he was a boy. Afterwards, when a teenager, he joined a gang and they murdered two people. They were condemned to death. Fortunately he repented before he died, but his life was ended, because he broke his vow to God.

Thirdly, God knows the future and knows what worse things will happed to you if you continue in sin after you had been made whole. He knew this man's sin, probably over thirty eight years ago, because he had been in that state so long. And He also knew the future that something worse will happed to him if he continue to sin. So also in our lives, God is not mocked, but whatsoever we sow, we shall reap.

An altar call was made and many hundreds responded.

9. July, Monday - Afternoon Service

Joseph Chauke

Scripture: Luke 15:11-17

The question, "Would you be made whole?", is directed at the individual by God. The importance of an individual realizing that he/she is an individual (and not a "we", "them" or "us") and responsable alone to God was emphasized.
One should not rely on other people as the lost son did. The lost son was forsaken by his friends.
Quote: "You are the only you on earth. There is no other you like you because you are unique."
The devotion was concluded by the question: "Would you be made whole?" God is desires to make us whole if we are only willing to make the first step as the lost son did.

9. July, Monday - Evening Service

Robert Mapanga

Scripture: Mal 4:1

It was mentioned about the day when all the wicked and those that did unrighteousness will burn as an oven. It is a terrible day for the unrighteous - those who are not cleansed and washed in the Blood of Jesus.

Just think of the rich man who burned in those flames. Why did he want his tongue to be cooled specifically, whereas all his members were burning? I think it was because he spoke evil with his tongue and sinned more with his tongue than with any other member of his body.

Oh, how terrible that day will be not. But I do not fear that day - and so also those that are Christians indeed. We have been saved and ransomed by Jesus, that we would not be part of those that are judged and condemned on that day. And this is the message to all: Be made whole by coming to Jesus, confessing and forsaking your sin. Then you can also flee the wrath of that day that is sure to come on all the wicked.

TNT also made a presentation (Here are some photo's and video clips).

10. July, Tuesday - Morning Service

Joseph Chauke

Scripture: Dan 1:4,8; Gen 19:17

Firstly, we see that these young men purposed to stay pure and not to defile themselves with the king's food. They said YES to God in the first place. And by refusing to defile themselves with the king's food, they said NO to the devil. And lastly, from Genesis, we see how the angels told Lot and his family to flee from the evil cities.

So in like manner, you need to say YES to Jesus by giving your life over to Him, and say NO to the devil by not defiling yourself with his works of darkness. His works are manifest amongst young people in their dress. Girls dress with clothes to attract young men and arouse lust in them. Dresses with slits and mini-scirts, exposing their body. We read in 2 Tim 2:22 that you young people must flee from the desires and lusts of the youth. Flee from it as Lot and his family had to flee from those evil cities. Purpose in your heart to stay pure and live for Jesus as Daniel and his friends.

10. July, Tuesday - Afternoon Service (devotion)

Ingrid du Preez

Scripture: Ruth 3:11

Ruth chose God and God's people above everything. We know her response to her mother that she want her God and her people to be her people.

And here we see God's provision for her, after she forsook all to follow Him and His people - "I will do to you all that thou require". Boaz is a type of Christ. This shows us Christ's response to those who forsake all for Him.

10. July, Tuesday - Evening Service

Erlo Stegen

Scripture: John 5:14

"...Go and sin no more..."

The previously paralysed man must have thought that his physical healing was the greatest event possible, but Jesus thought deeper. This was still insignificant compared to what should still have to happen: His spiritual healing. Sin now had to be dealt with in his life.
Only Christianity has the solution to sin:
Nothing can bring rest or restore peace after sin has entered a life except the blood of Jesus.
It is required that the person be liberated from sin.

Romans 7:24
"What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?"
In the days of the writing of this, there was a method of execution of a murderer where the murdered was tied to his murderer and left to putrefy on him and thus kill him. It was probably with this in mind that the writer wrote this. Only Jesus can set us free from this body of sin.

----------------------------------------------------

A 10 minute speech was made by the previous Junior Mayor of Durban, Pierre Andy Patton:

The superior importance of a commitment to God above pursuing our own dreams was emphasized, and the need for us to shine in the present dark age.

"Seek the Lord while he may be found", the time may come when it is too late.

The speech was concluded with a story:
Someone was selling beautiful ornaments at a pathetically cheap price. When asked the reason for this low price. The salesman replied that there was no stamp on to prove its authenticity. So too is any imitation of a Christian worthless.

11. July, Wednesday - Morning Service

Erlo Stegen

Scripture: John 5:6

He shared the secret to success in life. The key to success is spiritual vitality. God does not discriminate between skin colours; He discerns the colour of the heart. Those that fear and serves Him He promises to bless even to the thousand's generation and those that hate Him He curses to the third and forth generation.

John 5:6    "...Do you want to get well?"

This is not a stupid question, as it might at first seem; not all people WANT to be spiritually healed; many are on the broad way.

A large part of the service consisted of a story that is summarised here:
A couple of years ago, an ex-policeman, Kista Pillay, got a job in a hotel in Pietermaritzburg. He was responsible for taking care of the property. After some time he caught a thief in the act of stealing. The thief , who happened to be a sorcerer, sought revenge; Kista was haunted by spirits nightly and lost the ability to take in solid foods. After 8 months of vain medical attempts, he heard about KSB. He confessed his sins and was prayed for, but the spirits continued to torment him. He was asked by rev. Erlo Stegen whether there was not perhaps one sin left to serve as a foothold for Satan. As rev. Stegen spoke to him he smelt tabacco, and asked him concerning it. He then confessed this sin too.
That same night a gentleman wearing a smart suit entered his room to offer him a cigarette. When he refused his offer the man jumped on his chest and started to beat him. Kista cried out to the Lord and at that instant the man fled, exposing his tail to Kista in this act (revealing to Kista that it had been the devil himself).
After this he was completely set free and healed from his disease.
After a few months, however, he fell back into smoking, and sadly, he died in misery, being in even worse torment than before.

Again, this illustrate the importance of confessing and forsaking your sin completely and finally.

11. July, Wednesday - Afternoon Service

Pastors from Sudan

Rev Jeffrey Kayanga and Rev Kenneth Baringwa from Sudan spoke about the desparate situation in their country where Christians are persecuted by Muslims. They described the difference between Islam and Christianity, where Islam is a religion based on hate whereas Christianity is based on love.

12. July, Thursday - Morning Service

Erlo Stegen

How to grow in the Lord
This is the question many are asking. Once you have accepted Christ into your life and repented from your sins how shall you then live? A preacher was once asked about his salvation. He replied that he was saved, he is being saved and one day he will be saved when he is received into heaven. It is thus a continual relationship with the Lord.
In Rom 12:1 we read about total surrender. We must no longer submit ourselves to sin but to the Lord who now owns us. Then you no longer live but He lives in you.

12. July, Thursday - Afternoon Service

Zwelandile Ngidi (devotion)

Scripture: Gen 6:12 &13

God found Noah, the only righteous man in his generation, and commanded him to make an ark so that he and his family can be saved. Today the corruption in the world is no less than in the days of Noah. Jesus is our ark. We must hide ourselves in Him to be saved from the wrath of God that is sure to come on the world.

The rest of the afternoon various young people gave their testimonies of what God had done for them during this youth conference. One young man stood up, saying he had been saved before he came here, but the message he heard revived him greatly. Various others also thanked God how He changed their lives during this week.

12. July, Thursday - Evening Service

Erlo Stegen

Scripture: Phil 4:8

Now that you are a Christian, watch your thoughts. Some Christians make no progress, because they do not watch their thoughts. We should be growing so that when we meet again we are on a higher spiritual level.

Go into the entire world and teach the nations to keep the word of the Lord. If you keep to your own group, when will you reach the whole world? Be alive and live for Christ.

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true..." The truth cannot lie and is faithful. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of truth.

There was a young man who was a Christian who received about a thousand rand - putting it in different pockets. As he walked, he met up with thieves. They searched him and took his money. They asked him if it was all the money. He said yes. When they had just gone around the corner, he called to them. When they asked him why, he said "Forgive me, I found 5c. I lied to you. Here it is, take it." They looked at each other - the one started to wipe away tears. They returned all the money to him, saying that they could not take money from one who told the truth in that way. Obey that which Christ tells you through His Spirit.

Remember, we will have to give account of every idle word we speak.

"...whatever is noble..." You must behave like a person with dignity - every deed having nobility. There was a poor girl at school having only one potato for lunch every day. Many of the children made a mockery of her, like children having Satan in them, always do. At lunch she used to hide and eat her one potato. One day another girl overheard two boys planning to secretly replace her one potato with stones and then laugh at her when they see her reaction. Feeling pity for the poor girl, she went home, told it to her mother, and asked her mother to bake some cakes. The next day, after they replaced the potato with stones, she replaced it with nice food, and cakes. Great were the boys’ astonishment when, as she opened her packet, her eyes lit up, and she took out cakes and food. This is a noble deed, and such a person can be respected.

"...whatever is right..." Seek out that which is right in the sight of God - don't seek that which is wrong. "...whatever is pure..." In Greek - whatever is dedicated to God. Live a life that is pure. Think upon things that are pure, not holding bitterness.

If you surrender your life to the Lord, this is how your life should be.

"...whatever is lovely..." Things that have goodness in them. "...admirable...praiseworthy..." When you do something, that you can bring it before God and the church, that they can admire it.

"...think about such things..." Examining things, testing them, thinking of them logically. If the devil tells you to do something, ask him what will become of you if you do it. Remember, you are not what you think you are, you are what you think - the thoughts you have will be judged. Your thoughts are as deeds before God..

13. July, Friday

The main exodus of children back to their homes has been taking place since 4am and has continued into the night. About a thousand children still remain and they will probably be transported back home within the next 48 hours.

Through the day services have continued as normal. This evening the 2 Anglican pastors from Sudan, Rev Jeffrey Kayanga and Rev Kenneth Baringwa, showed a film "Sudan - the hidden Holocaust". The 55 minute video is a recent release and shows shocking material about the persecution of the Christian South by the Islamic North. Some of the footage confirmed that slavery of children is still taking place today.

Please continue to pray for the 7,000 or so children and teenagers who have spent the past week listening to the Word of God. Many of them made the decision to come to Christ. They are from very difficult circumstances and will need the grace of our Lord to stand firm in their faith.

The next Youth Week has been announced - it is to take place, the Lord willing, from 7 to 14 December 2001.
