POWER OF WORDS Our words, others words (incl devil), God's Word Intro: Words carry and create life and death. 1. OUR WORDS - Matt 12: 36 & 37. "By your words you will be justified or condemned." James speaks of the tongue and it's power. "Let no evil talk proceed from your mouth." (Eph 4:v29) Being negative, sarcastic and gossip. But there is more to Christian communication than negative purity. A vocabulary emptied of evil remains just that, an empty vocabulary - until it is filled with goodness. Therefore, Paul spells out four characteristics of Christian speech; " but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, that it may give grace to those who hear. " (v. 29). "A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, and a word spoken in due season, how good it is!" (Prov. 15:23). 2. "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver" Prov. 25:11. B. May our goal be to have a "refreshing" effect on those we deal with - Philem. 7. 2. OTHERS' WORDS - 2Tim 2:16 & 17, "Shun profane and vain bablings...message spread like cancer." Prov 5:3 "lips drip oil". Young man in Prov 7 seduced by her words (part of her 3 fold technique of dress, touch, words). Words seduce, create intimacy and feelings. Be careful of relationships which create wrong intimacy. But positive words of others: Also in Prov 5:vs 13 - listen to "voice of teachers." Pay attention to those who bring words of life. 3. WORDS OF GOD - Deut 8: 3, Ps 119: 11 & 50; Jn 1:1, Eph 5:26; Phil 2:16: Col 3: 16 Let the words of life dwell in you richly. |
