Is 30:1

"Woe to the rebellious children," says the LORD,
"Who take counsel, but not of Me,
And who devise plans, but not of My Spirit,
That they may add sin to sin;"

We read here of rebellious, obstinate children, who make schemes to hide their sin, like Ananias and Sapphira. To add sin to sin is like a chain with rings. If someone, for example, steals something, then he hides it. When confronted, he lies, and so the one sin is added to the other, until it becomes a chain that binds him.

Some people are quick to point out sin in others, but excuse it in themselves or their children. To have double standards is evil before God. Pray to God to keep you from such a hypocritical life. Do not excuse sin in your own life. Those that are sharp when they judge sin in others, but blunt when they judge sin in their own lives, walk in the flesh and not in the Spirit. The Bible commands us to stay away from all appearance of evil.

Let's look at what sin does to a person.

In Genesis we read of Adam and Eve. When Eve sinned, she dragged Adam into it as well. Adam allowed himself to be influenced. If it was an enemy or stranger which offered him the fruit, he would have rejected it, but because it was Eve whom he loved, he tolerated it and eventually sinned.

However, when God drew near to them because of their sin, he held Adam accountable as the head. Adam added sin to sin by excusing himself, accusing his wife, and then going as far as accusing God - "the woman You have given me". Eve blamed the serpent.

When you sin, rather admit it immediately, confess and forsake it. Then you will find mercy. But do not add sin to sin.

In Joshua 7 we read of the sin of Achan. He stole stuff from Jericho, which God expressly forbade them to take. When Joshua gave him and his family time to examine themselves and come out with the sin, they hardened their hearts. Only when he was put into a corner, and there was no way out anymore, did he acknowledge his guilt. Not only he, but his whole family and goods were stoned together. He added sin to sin and died because of that.

Sometimes people do not die because of their sin, but because they add sin to sin. If they confessed their sin right at the beginning, they would have received pardon. But there comes a time when God's grace will come to an end.

There is no blessing in covering up sin. You will not prosper. God even knows your secret sins, and will eventually bring them to light (Ps 90:8).

When monkeys hide in trees, they forget to hide their tails, and so too, when you hide your sin, the tail always sticks out.

God wants us to be pure before Him. He doesn't want to find sin with us.

We read in John 3:20, "For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed."

and in Eph 5:11, "And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them."

We should hate darkness and love the light. Some hate the light because their deeds are evil. God commands those with secret sins to expose them, before they add rebellion to their sin, and they be tied hands and feet and cast out into everlasting darkness.
