(Summary of sermon by Rev Erlo Stegen)

Gen 2:18-25

From the Creation account in Genesis we read how God created the heavens and the earth, the plants and all the animals. Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth” (Gen 1:26). God created man as His crowning glory.

Today the theory of evolution (otherwise known as macro evolution) is taught in the public schools; but it is only a fairytale for grownups and has contributed nothing towards science. The simplest living organism's design is vastly more complex than the finest swiss watch, yet evolutionists claim that it formed by blind chance. As the Bible says in Rom 1:20-22, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools”.

When God had created Adam, he brought all the animals to him to see what he would name them. And whatever Adam called each animal, that was its name. Names have meanings, and Adam named each animal according to what it was. After Adam had named all the animals, no companion was found for him comparable to him. So God caused a deep sleep to come over Adam, took one of his ribs and made it into a woman, and brought her to Adam. Adam immediately recognised that she was different to all the animals, a helper comparable unto him, and he called her woman, "because she was taken out of man".

Note that Eve was taken from the side of Adam; not from his feet to be trampled on, neither from his head to sit on his head. Marriage should be a blessed union, a symbol of Christ and His Church. Your marriage will be blessed if you seek God's will in the matter. However, if you get infatuated with a girl and marry her because of her beauty and the way that she dresses, you will regret it before long. Many a beautiful peach has a worm inside, as Solomon has said, "charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised" (Prov 31:30).

Parents must take care to raise their children in the fear of the Lord. Many children end up on the wrong way because of their mothers. In stead of stopping the children from going the wrong way, they encourage them in their evil way. Remember Spurgeon's mother who prayed, "if my children choose not to follow Thee I will be a swift witness against them on Judgment Day". But as the saying goes "blood is thicker than water", and many parents rather turn a blind eye to their children's wicked ways and so destroy their own souls too.

Eve's creation from Adam's side is a picture of the new birth of a Christian from Jesus' pierced side. Unless you meet with Jesus who died on Golgotha, was wounded in His side and are born again from His side you cannot see the Kingdom of Heaven, neither stop sinning. You might say that you don't want to sin, but you will keep on sinning because the sin nature is in you and it can only be killed by being born again.

Would you forsake all and follow Christ? May this be your answer today.
