John 2:1-4, On the third day there was a wedding in
Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Now both Jesus and His disciples
were invited to the wedding. 3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to
Him, They have no wine. 4 Jesus said to her, Woman, what does your
concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.
Mary was a wonderful woman and upright, but here she made a
mistake. She didn't realise that He had already started His ministry with His disciples,
and interfered where she should not have interfered. Mary's problem was her tongue.
However, she was not a touchy woman. When He rebuked her, her response shows her
character. She accepted the rebuke.
The Bible says that of all the members of the body the tongue is
the worst (James 3:5-8). Christians sin the most with their tongues.
Note that Jesus did not say that it was untrue what she said, but
His point was, "My time has not yet come."
Do you know that God has His times. There is a time to speak and a time to keep quiet.
Many people just speak what they think should be said and in so doing they do a lot of
harm. Others keep quiet when they should speak.
The Holy Spirit cannot fill people who cannot wait on God's timing. When His brothers
wanted to go up to the feast He answered them, "My time has not yet come." (John
7:8)
(I cried to God to fill me with His Spirit, and I wanted Him
badly; I wanted Him now. But He answered me, "My time has not yet come." Today I
thank Him for doing it in His time and not according to my time.)
You can pray till your deathbed for God's Spirit but unless you
realise that God has His time and that He works in His time, you won't succeed.
You must follow in His footsteps and follow Him. If you go in
front, you will go astray. You must bow to His will and His guidance. The Bible says you
must "be quick to listen, slow to speak" (James 1:19). When you hear something
take a pause and pray that God will lead you how you should respond. By your words you
will be justified and by your words you will be condemned (Matth 12:37).
Test and prove yourself whether your words will not condemn you
one day, for the Bible says in Matth 12:36, "That every idle word that men shall
speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of Judgement."
